The sales figures from the iPad continue to exceed the predictions of even the most optimistic Apple fans. 
Today crown the iPad as the consumer electronic with the fastest adoption rate ever, stealing the title from the once-coveted DVD player.



The iPad sold 3 million units in the first 80 days after its release in April, and its current sales rate is about 4.5 million units per quarter, says Bernstein Research, a rate far surpassing that of the first iPhone.

BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion will have a lot to prove if it releases a much-anticipated tablet PC.
Citing unnamed sources, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that the so-called BlackPad could be unveiled as early next week at a developer's conference in San Francisco. The actual device is expected to become available in the fourth quarter, the Journal said.
A RIM spokesperson told USA TODAY that it does not comment on rumors and speculation.

RIM has been losing ground in the smartphone arena that has been its traditional stronghold. Researcher Gartner predicts that phones running the BlackBerry operating system will account for 11.7% of the worldwide market by 2014, down from 17.5% this year.....

Gartner has released a report predicting that by 2014, Android will be second only to Symbian in mobile operating system marketshare worldwide, with the two platforms accounting for nearly 60% of the mobile OS market within the next four years. The news follows numerous recent bullish reports on the state of Android in the U.S.

We don’t see many devices running on Nokia’s Symbian platform in the U.S., save a few feature phones here and there. In the rest of the world, however, Symbian remains the dominant mobile OS, in part because it is open source and can be used on devices at various price points....
